The Balderdash Collection -- About Us
Site last published: 03/11/10
For the past several years I have been holding many successful rummage sales with a friend. Before we knew it, we were selling items for friends, family and customers. This last year (2008-2009) things got a little crazy. We had so many people wanting us to sell their items, including estate and downsizing items, that we couldn’t keep up. My friend was getting burnt out, but I was loving it.
If you have ever had a rummage sale, then you know that you are at the mercy of the weather, and limited by city ordinances. Since the rummage season is short here in northern Illinois, I decided to take it a step further and convinced my husband to allow me to open a consignment/resale shop while continuing to do estate and downsizing sales.
With the economy the way it is now, many people need extra money. Some of those people are working more than one job and some don’t have a job at all. With families to take care of and little time to organize their own sale, it seemed like a perfect time for us to open a family owned resale shop and sell on consignment. Not only is it good for the seller, but for those in need of slightly used items at reasonable prices.
My son, Joey, is working with me full-time, and my husband, Bill, will be helping part-time. Together we started the search for an empty store and once we looked on Genesee Street in downtown Historic Waukegan, we knew we found where we wanted to be. The large show windows at 114 N. Genesee Street were perfect! I have a background in display and ambiance, so I insisted on a store where I could show off the large variety of merchandise that we will have for sale. We are located less than a block from the beautiful Genesee Theatre and there are many restaurants and shops near by.
Next on the list was a name for the store. Joey and I started researching word meanings and came up with balderdash, which means nonsense. It is an unusual name and seems to fit. Many stores specialize in certain items, like clothing, jewelry or shoes. Our specialty is that we have a wide variety of goods for sale. It is a real collection of previously luv’d goods, which helped us decide to call our store The Balderdash Collection, with a subtitle of Previously Luv’d Goods.
As well as selling in the store, we have the option of listing items on eBay for our customers. So, if you have items that you don’t want any longer - or simply can’t use - give us a call. We would be happy to talk to you about how we do consignment and see if you would like us to sell for you. Also, be sure to stop in and see the wide range of items we carry.
